SEMPORNA: The government continues to place Sabah’s security as a top priority with the construction of a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) complex worth RM65.28 million here, which will serve as the frontline maritime defence facility for the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone).

pic) said the complex, located at Batu 1, Jalan Bubul, Tampi-Tampi, is equipped with various facilities, including a main administrative building, logistics and support blocks, a jetty and a marina for MMEA vessels and boats.
“The complex is also equipped with a helipad for air operations, a parade ground, sports facilities and residential quarters for personnel.
“These modern facilities are expected to further strengthen maritime security in Sabah, particularly along the east coast, which often faces threats such as smuggling, the entry of illegal immigrants and cross-border crimes,” he told reporters at the handover ceremony of the complex project here today.
He added that the new complex will enable MMEA personnel to respond more swiftly and efficiently to any maritime security incidents, while also boosting asset presence and personnel morale in the field.
“The complex will serve as the main operational and patrol centre for the Semporna Maritime Zone, in addition to functioning as a coordination hub for security operations and joint training with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), the Royal Malaysia Police and the Royal Malaysian Navy,” he said.
Construction of the complex began on Jan 30, 2020, with the onshore building components completed ahead of schedule on Sept 29, 2025, while work on the 165-metre access bridge and 100-metre jetty head is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by July 2026.
Apart from Sabah, he said the government is also enhancing national maritime security through the construction and upgrading of enforcement agency facilities, including new MMEA complexes in Kelantan and Labuan.
“We are also strengthening our fleet with the addition of four helicopters awaiting delivery, as well as a mothership currently under construction in Türkiye,” he added.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said Malaysia had received a vessel from the US Coast Guard, which is currently en route and expected to arrive in Klang, Selangor, on Nov 5.
