TAMBUNAN: Kampung Monsok Ulu residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief as their decades-long wait for a new bridge has at last become a reality.
After numerous efforts and applications made over the years, the construction of the Sungai Monsok Ulu Bridge at KM 4.5 along Jalan Monsok Ulu here is now actively underway.
The project’s approval was achieved through the close cooperation and discussions between Keningau MP and Tambunan Assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, the Federal Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) and the Tambunan District Public Works Department (JKR).
The bridge construction project, valued at nearly RM7.5 million, commenced on May 27, 2025, and is scheduled for full completion by Aug 26, 2026. Once completed, the bridge is expected to greatly benefit more than 500 residents in the area and its surroundings.
This facility will not only make it easier for villagers to transport their agricultural produce to market but will also help them travel to Tambunan town for daily needs such as visiting government offices, clinics, hospitals, schools and other essential services.
Kampung Monsok Ulu Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairman Kennedy Martin said the project is the result of Dr Jeffrey’s dedication and attentiveness to the people’s needs.
“This bridge symbolises YB’s concern for the needs of rural communities, especially here in Monsok Ulu. We are deeply grateful for his tireless efforts in championing basic infrastructure for the people of Tambunan,” he said when met.
Kennedy added that villagers previously faced great difficulty crossing the river, particularly during the rainy season, when the route often became impassable and unsafe.
“When this bridge is completed, it will not only ease movement but also improve safety and enhance the village’s economy,” he added.
The project marks Dr Jeffrey’s continued commitment to ensuring that communities in the interior are not left behind in the tide of development.
