KENINGAU: Steel Steady, a community project focusing on building repair and restoration, was founded by the welding technology program of Keningau Vocational College (KVC) here.
The project was successfully carried out with the collaboration of several parties on 24 and 25 October 2025 at SK Kampung Keningau buildings, with funding amounting to RM15,000 provided by Impact Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia.
This project was one of ten initiatives nationwide selected to receive the Rakan Muda Academy grant to empower youth through volunteerism and community activities.
The project began with a basic welding workshop for nearly 100 youth volunteers from KV Keningau, Geomatika College, SM Saint Francis Xavier, SMK Gunsanad and SMK Apin-Apin held at the college.
It was followed by repair and upgrading work at several buildings and identified as needing maintenance and improvement.
Among the works successfully completed at a community project at SK Kampung Keningau were the installation of stair handrails and door barriers as well as drain grates, repairing of fans and sockets, replacement of planks on wooden floors, installation of mosquito nets, construction of concrete floor slabs, and some painting and cleaning activities.
The main goal of these repairs was to make the classrooms, prayer room, and teachers’ room safer, more comfortable, and conducive. The work process required various technical skills and types of equipment.
Therefore, KVC’s students involved in this project were those specializing in welding technology, electrical, and construction programs, as well as students from automotive and cosmetology programs.
In addition to the repair work, the project also included guidance for volunteers without technical skills, which was conducted by experienced KVC’s students from technical backgrounds.
The project was led by welding technology teacher Firdaus Sariman, under the supervision of the head of welding program Azme Budiman and workshop coordinator Nabil Fikri.
The student leaders of the project were Nur Alia Ayuni Muahamad Husrin, Andrew Mark Dalubatan, and Dylan Ivander Lucas. The team consisted of many members from the welding program and other technology programs.
The college Director, Lumang anak Lang, expressed deep appreciation for the team’s efforts in successfully implementing this community project for the benefit of teachers and pupils at the school.
He praised them not only for using their technical skills to help the community but also for mentoring and training volunteers from schools and educational institutions around Keningau in basic technical skills particularly basics in welding.
