Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor received a courtesy call from the newly appointed Republic of Indonesia Counsel General in Kota Kinabalu, Bapak Noorman Effendi, at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Sri Gaya here, on Monday.
During the meeting, Hajiji extended his congratulations to Noorman on his appointment and expressed hope that the long-standing diplomatic and bilateral ties between Sabah and Indonesia would continue to flourish, especially in key aspects such as economy, investment, education, and the labour force.
Both leaders also discussed initiatives to enhance people-to-people connections between Sabah and Indonesian regions that share geographical proximity and cultural similarities.
The discussion highlighted the deep-rooted social and community interactions that have long existed between the peoples of both nations.
The courtesy call reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to further deepen relations and explore new opportunities for mutual benefit.
Later at a session with the media, Noorman said the two neighbouring countries shares a long-standing and close relationship that should be continuously enhanced.
“As two nations sharing one island, it is important that we continue strengthening our ties,” he said during a media gathering at the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) office here.
He said many Indonesians are residing in Sabah, including those who have become Malaysian citizens, are of Indonesian descent, or work in plantations, non-plantation industries and other professional sectors.
“My responsibility here is to ensure their welfare and, at the same time, to foster even closer ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, especially Sabah,” he added.
Noorman said KJRI Kota Kinabalu has carried out various initiatives in the State to promote economic and investment opportunities while strengthening Indonesia’s cultural presence.
“We aim to showcase Indonesia beyond Kalimantan, to include Sulawesi, Java, Sumatra, Bali, Papua, Maluku and others, each with unique attractions and potential for future collaboration,” he said.
