TAWAU: Pakatan Harapan’s Sri Tanjong candidate Philip Yap Wui Lip has highlighted the vital role of Chinese education in cultivating talent, strengthening community values and serving as a shared educational resource for all ethnic groups in Tawau.
Despite a busy campaign schedule, Philip attended the Tawau Sabah Chinese High School charity performance over the weekend, where he met with the school board, faculty and staff to express his continued support for educational development.
He acknowledged the century-old institution as a pillar of Tawau’s education landscape, even though he is not an alumnus.
Recently, he met with the school board’s deputy chairman, Datuk Goh Chew Chuan, and members to discuss the construction of the school’s history museum, ongoing toilet upgrade works and future development plans.
Philip praised the board, the school and the charity performance organising committee for their commitment in advancing the school’s mission despite limited resources.
“The dedication of educators and the organising committee is a source of pride for Tawau and a catalyst for educational advancement,” he said.
He also highlighted the MADANI government’s support for Chinese education, including:
- RM21.16 million allocated to Chinese independent high schools nationwide for 2026;
- RM47.8 million for maintenance and upgrading of Chinese primary schools (SJKC) this year, with increases every year since 2023;
- RM5.05 million for Chinese national-type secondary schools.
These allocations, he said, reflect the federal government’s recognition of multi-stream education and help strengthen school facilities and teaching quality.
Philip added that his support for the school is a modest gesture aimed at encouraging broader community involvement to enhance the learning environment for future generations.
