KOTA KINABALU: Film enthusiasts and human rights advocates in the city will have the chance to watch nearly 30 short films, documentaries and music videos exploring the theme of water and human rights at a special screening organised by Cinemata.
The programme, titled Rising Waters, Raising Rights: Human Rights Through the Lens of Water, brings together works from the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia as part of the Human Rights Day observance.
Cinemata said the Malaysia Premiere will take place at Ruang Tamu Ekosistem in Alamesra on Dec 13 (Saturday) from 8pm-10pm, with free admission for all visitors.
The organisers added that communities outside Kota Kinabalu can also host their own free watch parties by requesting full access to the hybrid physical-online programme, which runs from 10 to 24 December across the Asia Pacific.
Cinemata said the full programme line-up will be announced soon and will allow hosts to customise their screenings according to their local needs.
The event is curated by Eunice Helera from the Philippines and Borneo-based filmmaker Nadira Ilana, who invited the public to participate and engage with the films’ themes.
The organisers said they hope the screenings will encourage more conversations on how water shapes people’s lives and rights across the region.
Cinemata is a social-issue film platform for the Asia-Pacific, hosting over 6,000 user-contributed works from more than 30 countries to highlight critical but often overlooked regional issues.
