Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old crane supervisor was on Thursday jailed one month and fined RM2,000, or eight months’ jail in default, for assaulting a colleague at a construction site in Sepanggar.
Teo Hun Neng pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to voluntarily causing hurt to Wong Lik Ming at 10.22am on September 7 at the eighth floor of the Wisma Laskar TLDM construction site in Sepanggar.
The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries up to a year’s jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Muhammad Yousof Tahir Mahmood informed the court that on the said day, Wong was resting alone at the site when Teo approached him and punched the left side of his face.
Wong later lodged a police report.
Further investigation showed Teo was unhappy that Wong, who was his co-worker, had instructed the crane operator to hoist a lintel beam. Although Wong tried to explain, Teo punched him in the face.
Wong suffered swelling to his left cheek, a bleeding lip, and the loss of a previously damaged molar.
Unrepresented, Teo said he had not been working since the incident and requested a lenient sentence, citing his elderly mother and his ongoing job search.
The prosecution, however, sought a deterrent sentence. The court ordered Teo to serve his jail term starting Thursday.
In a separate case, a 25-year-old man, Md Yusry Yusdy, was jailed three months for stealing electrical fuses from a People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Inanam.
Yusry pleaded guilty to stealing six C40 two-phase fuses belonging to DBKK Holdings Sdn Bhd at Block E of the Kionsom PPR at 12.15am on October 19.
Police officers on patrol spotted him behaving suspiciously while cutting the fuses from an electrical panel. He attempted to flee but was apprehended.
A further inspection recovered the six fuses, along with tools including a knife, screwdrivers, scissors, a nut head, and an iron rod used to remove the fuses.
Yusry admitted he intended to sell the stolen items. Investigations confirmed the fuses belonged to DBKK Holdings, which manages the electrical facilities at the housing project.
The offence is punishable under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment and a possible fine.
