SANDAKAN: A RM2.4 million Closed House Broiler Farming Project is set to generate substantial income for 3,000 members of the Kinabatangan Farmers’ Organisation (PPK).

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the high-impact project was approved earlier this year and will be implemented under the 2026 Rolling Plan (RP1).

“This RM2.4 million project is the best example of how we translate national policy to the local level.

“With a capacity of 30,000 chickens per cycle and the ability to operate up to four cycles a year, the project will not only contribute to the national Self-Sufficiency Rate (SSR) target, but is also expected to generate substantial income for the PPK, with estimated annual gross revenue reaching RM2.75 million,” he said.

He said the project, to be implemented in Bukit Garam, meets modernisation criteria, including the use of a Closed House System that is more efficient and environmentally friendly, as well as smart farming and IoT technology for digital monitoring of temperature and operations.

This also includes complete infrastructure such as farm access roads, as well as stable water and electricity supply.

Mohamad said his ministry intends to replicate the project model as it is more commercially viable, with a return on investment of as high as 27.99 per cent, thereby improving farmers’ living standards through dividends and employment opportunities.

He was speaking to the media after officiating the Sentuhan Agro Madani @ Kinabatangan Programme at Kinabatangan Town Open Square on Thursday.

Also present were Malaysian Farmers’ Organisation Authority Chairman Dato’ Wira Mahfuz Omar and Sabah Farmers’ Organisation Authority Director Fitrisubroto Yahmin.

Meanwhile, Mohamad urged all farmers and livestock breeders in Kinabatangan to continue supporting the initiative by taking advantage of the allocations and incentives provided by the Madani Government.

PPK Kinabatangan Chairman Ardin Suradi said the implementation of the project on a five-acre site will not only benefit PPK members but will also help stabilise chicken supply in Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid and Lahad Datu.

“Efforts to establish the Closed House Broiler Farming Project began three years ago and it was approved this year. Previously, the PPK successfully implemented several high-return projects such as oil palm and fruit cultivation projects,” he added.
