TAWAU: The Hong Kong–Tawau direct flight, scheduled to officially commence operations today (Tuesday), marks another significant milestone for the international air connectivity network at Tawau Airport (LTT).
Chinese Chamber of Commerce Tawau (CCCT) President Chia Seong Fatt said Hong Kong is an important international financial, trade and aviation hub, as well as a meeting point of Eastern and Western cultures, with close ties to the Southeast Asian region.
“The launch of the direct flight between Hong Kong and Tawau not only facilitates travel between the two destinations, but also provides Tawau with more direct and efficient international access in terms of tourism, trade and cultural exchange,” he said.
He added that the new route is expected to enhance Tawau’s international capacity, enabling more foreign tourists to visit and discover Tawau more easily, while also opening up new opportunities for local enterprises, tourism operators and related industries.
According to him, the opening of the route will not only strengthen air links between Tawau and international cities, but also reinforce the district’s role within the regional and international aviation network, thereby injecting fresh momentum into the town’s development.
Meanwhile, CCCT Vice-President William Tan said the chamber is working together with Tawau Airport management and several local organisations to welcome passengers arriving on the inaugural flight.
He said the welcoming event aimed to showcase Tawau’s unique character and hospitality through local elements for passengers from Hong Kong, including a lion dance performance personally sponsored by CCCT President and the presentation of commemorative souvenirs.
The chamber hopes that passengers on the inaugural flight will enjoy a meaningful experience and form a positive first impression of Tawau.
CCCT expressed its appreciation to all parties who provided support and assistance in realising the opening of the flight route, including the Malaysian Transport Ministry and Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.
Appreciation was also extended to Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Sabah Tourism Board, Tawau Airport management, the airline concerned, and seven major Chinese associations in Tawau.
Also acknowledged were Tawau Food and Beverage Traders Association, Tawau Journalists Association, as well as various community organisations and community leaders who have consistently supported the district’s development.
