KOTA KINABALU: Two people were killed in a road accident involving a van and a motorcycle along Jalan UMS, Kebagu, at about 7.10 pm on Monday.
Kota Kinabalu police confirmed they received a report on the fatal crash, which involved a Kia van travelling from Kampung Numbak towards One Borneo and a Honda Vario 125 motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
Acting City Police Chief Supt Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said Initial investigations indicate that the motorcycle is believed to have entered the van’s lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
“Both the rider and pillion rider suffered severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers from Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. The van driver was not injured,” he said.
He added that the van sustained damage to the front section, while the motorcycle was badly damaged.
“No party is suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but blood samples will be taken for toxicology analysis.
“Initial investigations found that the motorcycle is believed to have entered the path of the van, leading to a collision. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers,” Syed added.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Members of the public with information are urged to contact Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters at 088-529222.
