Kota Kinabalu: University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) launched its Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Honours) programme on Monday, marking a milestone as Sabah’s first architecture degree offering.
The inauguration ceremony held at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru drew some 150 attendees, including representatives from Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) Sabah Chapter and prospective students.
The event was officiated by UCSF Board of Directors Chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Yaakub Johari.
A highlight of the launch was a special sharing session by Dato’ Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Mahmud, who led the development of Merdeka Tower 118, currently the world’s second tallest building.
Tengku Abdul Aziz shared insights from the iconic project during the session, which included a question-and-answer segment with attendees.
UCSF Vice Chancellor Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris announced the programme will admit its first cohort in February.
He acknowledged key partners who provided technical and professional support in establishing the programme, including Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and PAM Sabah Chapter.
“I would like to thank and acknowledge the expert support, professional assistance, technical as well as moral support by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia and Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia, Sabah Chapter,” Rafiq said.
He specifically recognised USIM Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Sharifudin, Dr Shala and the USIM team, as well as Datuk Shahriman, Victor, Daniel, Mok and other members of the Board of Studies.
“Let the story of Merdeka 118 remind you that no vision is too high if built on a strong foundation of knowledge and perseverance,” Rafiq said to the pioneer students.
He hoped the programme would contribute to a future that harmonises nature, culture and progress.
During the event, the Vice Chancellor proposed appointing Tengku Abdul Aziz as advisor for the Architecture Programme.
