TAWAU: The recent launch of several international flights at Tawau Airport demonstrates the district’s growing potential and its increasing recognition within regional aviation networks.
Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President Joseph Pang said this new development is the result of positive cooperation between the Federal Government, the State Government and the local community.
He hopes all parties will continue to maintain this strong cooperation in an effort to enhance the district’s capacity to welcome international tourists.
He wants foreign tourists to enjoy a holiday experience of “arriving smoothly, staying longer and wanting to return”, thereby contributing to more sustainable and continuous growth for Tawau.
Pang was commenting on the commencement of Hong Kong-Tawau direct flights on Tuesday, which he described as more than just the opening of a flight route, but representing a new phase in the town’s development.
Earlier, Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) President Chia Seong Fatt said the success of the inaugural Hong Kong-Tawau flight operated by Greater Bay Airlines adds another vital international route to the aviation map of Sabah’s East Coast.
“The launch of this flight will narrow the distance between the two destinations, in addition to providing a more direct and efficient air link for Tawau to connect with southern China and the Greater Bay Area economic hub.
“It is believed that this development will help strengthen trade exchange, tourism development and multi-industry cooperation,” he added.
Chia thanked Transport Minister Anthony Loke for his continuous concern regarding the development of Tawau Airport and the efforts to upgrade airport infrastructure, thereby laying an important foundation for Tawau as an international aviation hub.
He also expressed gratitude to MPT for their ongoing support, which is essential in building the town’s global image.
He said his organisation will continue to work closely with government agencies and industry partners to encourage the opening of more international flight routes here.
“This commitment is intended to help Tawau and the East Coast of Sabah become more competitive and developed.”
