The Sabah-Sarawak Power Grid Interconnection will strengthen Sabah’s electricity supply to be more stable, reliable and sustainable while reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based generation and boosting investor confidence, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said.
Speaking at the energisation ceremony at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Saturday, Hajiji said Sabah appreciated Sarawak’s willingness to be a strategic energy partner and described the project as a joint effort aligned with the shared vision of Bimp-Eaga.
He said advancing cross-border infrastructure through the Asean Power Grid would enhance economic prospects and investor confidence, with Sabah playing a strategic role as Malaysia’s gateway to Bimp-Eaga and a unifier of Borneo’s power systems.
Hajiji said the interconnection marked a vital milestone that would pave the way for future links with Kalimantan, Brunei Darussalam and eventually the southern Philippines, noting that the ceremony was also attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg.
He said the State Government, through a phased strategy led by the Sabah Energy Council, Energy Commission of Sabah and relevant agencies, was expanding a diversified energy mix including gas as a transitional source and renewables to ensure adequate reserve margins, system resilience and environmental sustainability under the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040.
