TAWAU: Police arrested three men suspected of drug abuse during separate operations across three settlements in the district on Wednesday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the first suspect, a 46-year-old local, was detained at Taman Sentosa at around 12.30pm.
“The suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was detained during a crime prevention patrol by a Tawau police strike team,” he said on Friday.
While no illicit substances were found on the suspect, a preliminary urine screening tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. The suspect admitted to abusing syabu (crystal methamphetamine) before being taken to the District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.
A background check revealed prior criminal records, including drug-related offences, intimidation, and domestic violence.
The second arrest involved a foreign national in his 30s, reported for erratic behaviour and causing a disturbance in Kg Titingan.
Following a preliminary urine test by the District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND), the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
The third suspect, a 28-year-old foreign national, was detained during Op Tapis in Kg Pasir Putih.
Inspection of a cigarette pack he handed over revealed 11 packets containing clear crystals suspected to be syabu, weighing 5.04 grammes.
Preliminary urine tests also returned positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
Investigations into all three suspects are being conducted under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, with the third suspect also investigated under Section 39A(1) of the same Act.
“We will not compromise with those involved in drug abuse activities, as these acts are often the root cause of other crimes. Operations and patrols will continue to be intensified to ensure the district remains peaceful and free from the threat of drugs,” Jasmin said.
