SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Works and Utility is taking the water supply problems in Sandakan seriously and is committed to addressing the issue at its root cause.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said solutions will be implemented through close cooperation with all relevant agencies, including ground-level approaches rather than mere planning.
“We will continue to examine what the actual problems are that have caused the water supply to be disrupted here,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister believes that effective solutions can only be achieved through solid cooperation between the state government, local authorities, technical agencies, as well as support and understanding from the local community.
He said this to the media after attending the Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Performance Ceremony in conjunction with the 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations organised by the Persatuan Masyarakat Tionghwa Bersekutu Sandakan Sabah at the Dewan Yu Yuan, here, Saturday.
A total of 22 dragon, lion and unicorn dance associations participated in the event.
Meanwhile, supply from the Hilltop Water Treatment Plant and two nearby boreholes continue to provide water to residents in the town area.
Dr Joachim added that there are other plans in place to ensure continuous water supply to Sandakan.
On the annual event held by the association in Sandakan since 1980, he said it also reflects the harmony and uniqueness of the various cultural backgrounds, races and cultures in Sabah.
