KENINGAU: Individuals who intentionally block access to fire hydrants may face fines under the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341), warned Fire and Rescue Station Chief Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui.
Among the violations are sealing public fire hydrant chambers, fencing off hydrant pillars and chambers, and parking vehicles within designated fire hydrant zones.
He said this on Saturday following inspections that uncovered three instances of non-compliance, including hydrants obstructed with tables.
Firefighters have been conducting inspections, testing and maintenance of fire hydrants around Zone A to ensure the fire water supply system remains in optimal condition and ready for use at any time.
During these inspections, monitoring was also carried out on public fire hydrants to detect any obstructions or misuse that could affect their functionality during emergencies.
Severinus said fines had been issued and documentation recorded for further action in accordance with existing regulations and guidelines.
In some locations, premises had placed tables that obstructed hydrants from view, posing significant danger as firefighters may be unable to quickly locate them during a fire, especially at night.
He stressed that the public must not block fire hydrants by covering them or placing objects that conceal them.
“This is crucial because during a fire, the Fire and Rescue Department may be unable to locate or use the hydrants if they are obstructed,” he said.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) will not hesitate to take stern action against those who violate the regulations, including issuing fines. Repeat offenders may be prosecuted in court.
The department also reminded the public not to obstruct, tamper with or misuse fire hydrants, as they are vital safety assets in firefighting operations.
