SANDAKAN: Concerns over the implementation of Sandakan’s latest parking system were raised during a meeting between three Parti Warisan assemblymen and the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), here, Tuesday.

The three assemblymen were Calvin Chong (Elopura), Alex Thien (Tanjong Papat) and Alex Wong (Karamunting).

Thien proposed that the parking system implemented in the town centre and satellite townships be reviewed to make it more people-friendly.

He proposed two payment methods, namely the Smart Parking system and parking coupons, and a grace period for users.

According to him, the implementation of the new system must be carefully planned so that it does not burden the public while improving the quality of services provided by MPS.

Various matters related to public amenities were also raised during the meeting.

These included issues involving street lighting, drainage systems, market management, town cleanliness and solid waste management affecting the comfort of the local community.

He also highlighted the issue of refuse chambers in several high-rise buildings after garbage chutes in several buildings in the Old Slipway area were closed following the construction of waste houses by MPS.

“I also raised the issue of installing one-way road signage from Bridge 15 to Bridge 19 in Kampung Sim-Sim as there are still road users who assume the route is a two-way road, causing traffic congestion,” he said.

MPS President Walter Kenson said the Council takes seriously every issue raised and has instructed relevant officers to act more proactively and efficiently in addressing public complaints, adding that the matters would be handled in stages by examining alternative plans to ensure more organised and effective implementation.
