15 months for threat to kill mum

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old was jailed 15 months, Tuesday, for threatening to kill his mother.

Daniel Aaron Sahamin, a welder, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence against Stephane @ Betty, 72, in Kg Babah, Penampang, at 10am on Feb 25 this year.

Daniel changed his plea to guilty when the case was called for mention on Tuesday.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Yusdi Basri told the court that on the said day, Daniel became aggressive and smashed household items while holding a machete while threatening the complainant, who later lodged a police report for safety reasons.

Investigations revealed that Daniel had acted out of anger after the complainant objected to him befriending and bringing another woman home, as he is married with children.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Daniel, requested a lenient sentence as he is married with three children.

The prosecution applied for a deterrent sentence as a lesson to Daniel and to would-be offenders.

In a separate case, a man was jailed a total of six months on two counts of theft and assisting in disposing of stolen property.

Meni Amir was jailed three months after he pleaded guilty to stealing a handphone belonging to a woman at 9.50pm on March 30 at Ajmal Maju Restaurant in One Borneo here.

The charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the victim reported that her phone went missing while she was working at a shop in 1Borneo Hypermall on the night of March 30.

Investigations showed she had left the phone on the counter before it was taken.

CCTV footage captured Meni posing as a customer before taking the phone and leaving unnoticed.

Meni was later arrested by police, who also recovered the phone from him.

In the second case, Meni was sentenced to another three months’ jail by Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali after he admitted to assisting in disposing of a stolen 14kg cooking gas cylinder on March 31 this year at 2.20pm at a house in Kg Numbak, Kuala Manggatal.

He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.
