KENINGAU: A late-night scare gripped a household in Kg Pamalan when a venomous Spitting Cobra was discovered hiding inside a washing machine on Sunday.
Keningau Fire Station Chief Serevinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sinkui said a team was immediately dispatched to the scene after being alerted of the 11.14pm incident.
“Upon arrival, firefighters were led to the laundry area. When the washing machine was opened, a hissing sound could be heard from inside,” he said.
Checks revealed a black Spitting Cobra concealed at the base of the machine. The species is known to be highly dangerous as it can spray venom directly into a person’s eyes from a distance.

The firefighters managed to capture the snake without causing harm to anyone in the house.
The reptile was later released back into its natural habitat, away from residential areas.
Serevinus reminded the public to remain alert, noting that snakes often seek cool and hidden places such as washing machines, bathrooms, bedrooms and even unused tyres.

He also advised residents to keep their surroundings clean by trimming grass, clearing drains and reducing clutter, as messy areas can attract snakes and other pests.
“If you come across a snake, do not panic or make sudden movements. Slowly move away and keep a safe distance. Do not try to catch it yourself,” he said.
