SAN FRANCISCO: Apple has named longtime hardware chief John Ternus as its next CEO, succeeding Tim Cook from Sept 1 as the company navigates rising pressure to compete in artificial intelligence.
Cook, who boosted Apple’s market value by US$3.6 trillion over 15 years, will transition to executive chairman.
Ternus, with the company since 2001, has led key hardware revivals and worked on major products including the Mac, iPad and AirPods.
The leadership change comes as Apple faces investor concern over lagging AI innovation, having lost its शीर्ष spot to Nvidia.
A key challenge will be integrating AI into the iPhone, including its partnership with Google to bring Gemini technology into Siri.
Shares slipped about 0.5 per cent after hours.
