Fires unpredictable during dry season
Smoke can be seen billowing after the bush fire incident near here recently.
RANAU: The Ranau Fire and Rescue Station has recorded five bushfire cases as of March, but authorities warn that the current dry season makes conditions especially dangerous for any form of open burning.

Station chief PPgB Rantey Fred said most bushfires are caused by human activity, particularly land clearing using fire.

“While clearing land for agriculture may be necessary, using fire is a very bad idea,” he said after firefighters responded to a recent bushfire along Jalan Ranau–Kundasang, which was quickly brought under control.

In a separate incident, a small fire broke out at the Hakka Food Court in Ranau during hot and humid weather. Members of the public managed to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived.

Rantey urged residents, especially those in rural areas, to avoid open burning during the dry season, warning that fires can spread rapidly and become uncontrollable.

“Although the number of cases is still low, prevention is crucial. Open burning not only risks fires but also causes air pollution and health issues,” he said.

He stressed that firefighters’ priority is public safety, noting that fires become highly unpredictable in dry conditions. Residents living near forests or bush areas are strongly advised to refrain from any burning activities.

Rantey also highlighted an increase in reports of snakes entering homes during hot weather, as the reptiles search for cooler environments, water, and food.

“Snakes may hide in shaded areas, under debris, or even inside vehicles. Stay alert, check surroundings, and keep areas clean,” he said.

He advised residents to inspect vehicles, secure homes, and clear debris such as wood piles and tall grass. If a snake is spotted, the public should keep a safe distance and contact professionals.

In the event of a snakebite, victims should remain calm, immobilise the affected limb, and seek immediate medical attention.

Rantey urged the public to remain vigilant, limit outdoor activities during extreme heat, and ensure children are supervised at all times.

For emergencies, the public can contact the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station at 088-878779, hotline 019-2449348, or dial 999.

Fire and rescue personnel remain on standby to respond to any incident.
