James, who is also the Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, said the Paitan district-level Kaamatan celebration was the largest ever organised compared to previous years and marked the first time the event had been held in Boutition.

“This annual competition is not only a platform to highlight the talent and confidence of the younger generation, but it also plays a vital role in preserving and upholding the cultural heritage of the Sungai community.

“The Sungai ethnic group, which possesses a unique traditional culture, is part of the Paitanic Kadazan, Dusun, Murut and Rungus (KDMR) cluster and is the most populous tribe on Sabah’s east coast, particularly in Paitan.

“Therefore, efforts to further empower the culture and traditions of the Sungai community will continue through various initiatives, including this Kaamatan Festival celebration, to ensure they are not lost over time,” he said.
