Kadazan identity well recognised
Sinsua said the priority challenges facing indigenous communities are not merely terminology, but include protection of Native Customary Rights (NCR) and ancestral lands, economic participation and business opportunities, educational development for indigenous youth, preservation of language, culture and heritage, and stronger social unity and representation.
Kota Kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s matter-of-factly remark on “Kadazan” as one of the recognised communities of Malaysia, alongside Malays, Chinese, Ibans, Indians and others, confirms that the identity is already well established in the Malaysian context, said Datuk Lawrence Sinsua, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Kadazan Global Communities Berhad (KGCB), in a statement.

Anwar was quoted as saying: “I believe the majority of Malaysians, whether Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan and others, want a peaceful, stable and successful country,” in his speech at the National Wesak Conference on May 23 at Menara Ken TTGI, Kuala Lumpur, organised by the Malaysian Buddhist Consultative Council.

KGCB took note of the Prime Minister’s remarks, which were widely reported in the press the following day, where he referred to recognised communities in Malaysia including Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans.

This, Sinsua said, reflects that the identity “Kadazan” already carries national recognition and public understanding within the Malaysian context.
