Kota Kinabalu: Eleven illegal immigrants were sentenced to imprisonments by the Sessions Court here for committing various immigration offences.
All the illegal immigrants from Philippines and Indonesians pleaded guilty separately before Judge Hurman Hussain who then meted out sentences accordingly.
Ten of them were jailed four months each for entering the State without any identification documents.
They committed the offence under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155), carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
The eight Filipinos and an Indonesian were arrested during operation carried out by the Immigration Department at Kudat area.
During the operation, the illegal immigrants failed to produce their identifications or travel documents to the immigration personnel.
During mitigation, they asked for leniency and to be returned to their hometowns as soon as possible as well as the sentence to be served from the date of their arrests.
Meanwhile, an Indonesian woman was jailed a total of ten months’ jail for illegal entry and breaching the condition on her passport.
On the first count, she was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for entering the State illegally while the second count, she was sent to prison for another six months for violating the conditions on her passport.
The court ordered her to serve the jail sentence consecutively from the date of her arrest.
After completing their jail sentences, the ten were ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
