Pandelela, Cheong grab silver medal

Kuala Lumpur: National diving queen, Pandelela Rinong regained her competitive edge in the final leg of the 2014 Diving World Series in Monterrey, Mexico.Pandelela, who partnered Cheong Jun Hoong accumulated 328.56 points in the women's 10m synchronised platform to claim the silver medal in the event held early Saturday, according to International Swimming Federation (Fina) website www.fina.org.

Her usual partner Leong Mun Yee was unable to compete due to a shoulder injury.

Despite fielding back-up divers, China continued their splashing performance after Huang Xiaohui and Lian Jie won the gold medal with a score of 338.76 points.

Canadian divers, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion had to settle for bronze after amassing 323.28 points.

After the conclusion of the final leg, China emerged the overall champions with 144 points, followed by Malaysia (126 points) and third-placed Canada with with 114 points.

Wang Han and He Zi of China stamped their mark as the world best divers, retaining the gold they won in the fifth leg in Canada earlier this month after scoring 321.60 points.

Host divers, Dolores Hernandez and Laura Sanchez were a surprise package after taking the silver with 313.50 points while Canadian pair Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware had to settle for the bronze medal with 309.48 points.

In the men's category, Ahmad Amsyar Azman and Ooi Tze Liang continued their poor run after finishing in sixth place out of seven pairs in the 3m synchronised springboard with a score of 360.63 points.

China's pair of Cao Yuan and Lin Yue took the gold medal with 442.62 points, followed by Jack Laugher and Chris Mears of Great Britain with silver (423.78 points), while host divers, Jahir Ocampo and Rommel Pacheco took the bronze medal, having accumulated 422.91 points. - Bernama
