College student pleads guilty to disposing baby in rubbish bin

KUALA LUMPUR: A private college student on Tuesday pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of concealing the birth of a newborn baby boy by disposing its body in a garbage bin last month. Norhidayah Yon, 19, entered the plea after the charge against her was read before Magistrate Asyraf Rezal Abdul Manan. Asyraf Rezal fixed Dec 4 for sentencing pending a report by a sociologist.

Norhidayah, who was crying non-stop in the dock, had disposed the body of the baby at a rubbish at Block C, PV6, Platinum Hill Park Condo, Jalan Setapak, Wangsa Maju, here, at 4am on Oct 28.

She was charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years' jail or fine, or both. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ooi Chean Ling while the accused was not represented.

Meanwhile, in another case, four policemen, including an inspector, pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to soliciting a bribe as an inducement to release a man nabbed over a drug offence.

The accused were Inspector K. Ravindran, 33, Corporal Mahzan Hakim Mohamad Zain, 31, Lance Corporal Faizal Miza Zakariah, 30, and Constable Jasli Jahirin, 24, all from Sentul District Police's Narcotics CID.

Ravindran was alleged to have solicited RM40,000 from a trader, Dhalgit Singh Mahinder Singh, 31, through a call via a mobile phone owned by K. Manimaran as an inducement to release Manimaran who was arrested for drug possession.

Ravindran is alleged to have committed the offence between 8.15pm and 10.15pm on June 4, 2013 in Kepong, here.

He was charged under Section 16(a)(B), of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if convicted.

The police officer was also charged with conspiring with the other three accused to obtain the bribe from the same individual for the same purpose the next day.

They are alleged to have committed the offence by the roadside in front of the McDonald's Restaurant in Kepong here between 1.30 am and 2 am.

Judge Allaudeen Ismail allowed bail for Ravindran at RM15,000 and RM10,000 bail each for the other accused and set Dec 11 for mention.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Lokman Kasim while counsel Geethan Ram Vincent represented all four accused.
