GRANTED that potholes on roads are found all over Sabah only around Donggongon and Penampang are there many other features that indicate Sumazau is compulsory.Apart from potholes which seem to grow larger after the repair works by the road contractors, there exist manholes that are either depressed or protruding but never level with the surface of the road.
And in addition to the usual speed humps or "bongols", the road patching is always uneven.
This is the result of shoddy work where the bituminous premix used to fill the potholes and road excavation are not compacted properly but laid about an inch higher than the road surface where the contractor assumed that it will be compressed anyway by wheels of the traffic.
When some potholes and depressions are ignored by those concerned, the heavy rain will turn them into a splash pool as shown in picture above.
The evidence that the local authorities really want the traffic to do a sumazau can be seen on top of the street lights where plastic gongs are installed (pic left) via some million ringgit project, while the actual gong beating sound can be heard from the Tamu Ground.
This traffic Sumazau serves to shorten the life of the cars which is beneficial for both the workshops and the car dealers.
