Imports exceed exports by $1mil in 1962

NBN & SABAH TIMES (Friday, December 14, 1962) - JESSELTON, Thurs. – The total value of trade from North Borneo Ports for October 1962 amounted to $22,765,825. Imports amounted to $23,183,973.

The 1961 October figures were: exports $18,469.016 and imports $19,944,298.

N. Borneo’s exports for January to October 1962 amounted to $192,004,559, an increase over the same period for last year when the figure was $174,044,978. The trade balance was reduced to minus $988,073 from minus $3,742,816 for the same period. Total imports for January-October 1962 amounted to $192,992,632, compared with $177,787,794 for the same period last year.

Value of trade by ports.

Statistics of the value of trade by ports for the period January to October 1962 show that Sandakan was by far the busiest port. Her exports increased from $56,601,432 (1961) to $68,299,556, and her imports from $54,470,481 (1961) to $64,825,587.

Semporna’s trade has more than doubled – exports for January – October 1961 amounting to $12,301,130 compared with $5,962,218 for the same period last year. Imports rose from $5,570,018 to $9,401,345.

Jesselton’s trade showed a very slight decrease in exports from $24,323,509 (1961) to $24,294,989 but an increase in imports from $49,925,252 (1961) to $56,215,845, January – October 1962.

Tawau’s exports increased very slightly from $39,610,596 (Jan.-Oct.1961) to $39,709,634 (1962). (For October they increased from $3,499,855 (October 1961) to $5,421,489 (October 1962). Labuan’s exports decreased from $17,932,140 (Jan.-Oct. 1961) to $15,457,946, and imports from $25,208,413 (1961) to $19,766,075 (Jan.-Oct. 1962).
