THE response to the recent 14th KK Jazz Festival after a six-year break showed the city still longed for an event that celebrated music, unity and purpose.

The KK Jazz Festival is poised to reclaim its status as a key cultural and tourism highlight in Sabah, particularly in strengthening Kota Kinabalu’s tourism appeal.

“The festival’s return signals a renewed commitment to celebrating jazz while supporting meaningful community causes,” said co-organising Chairman Jack Ong. Jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) and the Society of Performing Arts Sabah (SPArKS), the festival continues its legacy as both a premier music event and a vital fundraising initiative for non-governmental organisations.

“That it drew 1,000 attendees reflects how deeply the event is woven into Sabah’s music scene,” said co-Organising Chairman Benjamin Lo.

“RCKK President Jack Lo said the festival belongs to the community – the amount raised will support community projects by Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu while also uplifting our local performing arts scene by SPArKS.”

The festival’s impact resonated strongly with both attendees and partners.

“KK Jazz Festival is more than just music, vibes, and celebration. It’s a beautiful reunion of souls,” said attendee Alfred Allen.

SPArKS echoed this sentiment, highlighting the festival’s role in nurturing artistic growth and collaboration. Roger Wang, Co-Organising Chairman and Music Director, noted that the 2026 edition placed strong emphasis on regional talent alongside internationally acclaimed musicians.

“We are proud to showcase Sabah-based artistes on the same stage as renowned performers from around the world.

“This exchange is what keeps jazz alive, evolving, and relevant.”

Audiences were treated to performances by The Shun Ng Trio (US) featuring Yuuki Shiojima (Japan) based in Shanghai, China, Velvet Aduk (Sabah), Megan Hen (Sabahan based in KL) & the Wilson Quah Quartet (Penang / Sabah collaboration), Fluffbox x Teriver feat Dasha Logan (KL / HONG KONG), Anthony’s Groove Ensemble (Sabah / KL) and Appy & the Cosmic Soul (Sabah).

Alongside the Talent Search selections from under 18 and open categories (Sabah) were Dynamics, B2P Band, X.E.E Trio and Rolou Pomogunan.

The Society of Performing Arts Sabah, founded in 2007 by Datuk Adeline Leong, plays a pivotal role in supporting and elevating Sabah’s performing arts scene.

Beyond live performances, the festival’s educational workshops, including a drum workshop by renowned Arthur Kam, drew particular excitement from students and emerging musicians.

SPArKS President Jasmine Leong described this as “an invaluable opportunity to inspire young talents and deepen their appreciation of jazz’s rich diversity.”

The committee appreciated the continued backing from the State Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment as the main sponsor which was represented by Datuk Josie Lai as well as other corporate support and community partners.
