STUDENTS who have completed SPM and STPM are already receiving offer letters from universities now. Some students have been offered applied science by some universities. If you do not know what applied science is, learn about it before you accept or decline the course. You may have studied Biology, Physics or Chemistry in school. They might not have taught you applied science. So don’t panic.

“ Applied science is a discipline that is used to apply existing scientific knowledge to develop more practical applications, for example: technology or inventions. “

In natural science, basic science (or pure science) is used to develop information to explain phenomena in the natural world. This information is then put to use for practical endeavours through applied science. Applied science is generally engineering, which develops technology.

Medical sciences such as medical microbiology are examples of applied sciences. These sciences apply biology toward medical knowledge and inventions, although not necessarily medical technology, which is developed more specifically through biomedicine or biomedical engineering.

Specific Areas

An applied science student may specialise in one of the following areas; -

Applied Physics

Applied Mathematics

Architectural Science

General engineering

Automotive engineering

Biological engineering

Biochemical engineering

Chemical engineering

Civil engineering

Computer science

Computer engineering

If any of these areas are of particular interest to you, then studying applied sciences might be the right path for you.

What is epidemiology?

We are now faced with a deadly virus called Covid -19.  Applied scientists also study epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations.

It is an application of the formal sciences of statistics and probability theory. Genetic epidemiology is an applied science applying both biological and statistical methods. After this Covid-19 epidemic, there will be a good demand for epidemiologists.  Students studying applied science have the opportunity to specialize in this field.

Where to study applied

science in Malaysia

There are many universities, polytechnics and colleges where you can study applied science in Malaysia. . It is not a highly competitive course. Students who have completed SPM can enroll in a Foundation program or Diploma programme. Those who are eligible can obtain a degree in applied science. Some of the institutions offering applied science include:

University Malaya, University Science Malaysia, UITM, University Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, UNIMAS, and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.  Students can also study in private institutions such as UCSI, Inti, Quest, Nilai and Curtin University.
