Kota Kinabalu: The two-day 4th Penampang 4x4 Challenge to mark the annual Harvest Festival celebrations was a crowd puller among four wheel drive enthusiasts and people from all walks of life.Thousands thronged the competition site at Kampung Duvanson, while others were given the thrill and spills during the Charity Ride in one of the souped-up Pink Suzuki belonging to member Baharuhom Sogon.

For two days from as early as 9.00am, people gathered waiting for their turns to hop inside the vehicle, driven by Baharuhom himself to give them tests of the real off-roading skills over treacherous terrain.

The people who paid RM20 for adults and RM10 from children were part of the organiser, Penampang Four Wheel Drive Club's (SFWDC) charity project to raise funds as all the proceeds were donated to the Sabah Children's Cancer Society (SCCS).

Present to receive the donation on behalf of SCCS was Datin Ketty Pedro during the closing ceremony, which was officiated by Member of Parliament for Putatan Datuk Marcus.

A total of 35 competitors from all Sabah took part in the event. It was flagged-off by Sabah Sports Council (SSC) Director Terrance Pudin on Saturday.

The battle for honours in their vehicles was intense during the 2-day five special stages for both categories (2-door and 4-door).

In the 4-door category, Lahad Datu's driver Lim Soon Hing and co-driver Chan Fook Seng in their Vitara emerged as the champion to bring home cash RM1,000 plus loads of sponsorship goodies.

Tawau's ever-supportive participants and president of the Tawau Four Wheel Drive Club (TFWDC) SA Hanif Ahid and his co-driver Syed Suzaki Mihamad in their Isuzu Invader Space Cab settled for the second placing and received cash RM700 plus goodies. The third place went to the host's member Chin Chun Kian and co-driver Ng Foh Kong, who received RM500 plus goodies.

Due to slight technical error in the calculation of points, the organiser has decided to declare two competitors as joint champions in the 2-door category, which saw each receiving RM1,000 plus goodies.

The joint champions were Kiew Tet Sing and Shang Chung Kong of Tawau in their Suzuki and brothers Sunilin Masinin and Shairie Masinin of Kota Marudu, while the 2nd place went to Kian Heng Suntik and Jonas Hayong and host's member Chong Van Shin and Lo Fuk.

The 2nd and 3rd placing received RM700 and RM500 plus goodies respectively.
