Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Anglers Association (SAA) President Datuk Wilfred Lingham presented the proceeds from its recent Sabah International Fishing Tournament (SIFT) fish auction of RM4,000 to Sabah Single Mothers Association (Pitsa) President Norhanida Annol at Windbell Restaurant here on Sunday.According to Lingham his association decided this year to select Pitsa from a list of NGOs carrying out social work to receive the proceeds.

"Sabah Anglers Association feels that it is part of our moral responsibility and obligation to contribute the funds collected from organising the recent SIFT event this year (to deserving organisations and individuals).

"We feel that the Pitsa had done wonderful work particularly in the rural areas and we felt that we should assist them in a small way by donating the proceeds from the 286kg of fish that we auctioned in April this year where RM3,830 was collected and it was rounded up to RM4,000 which we have the pleasure now of handing over to Pitsa.

"We feel the association deserves our support and we have also committed our support for next year to the same NGO. If we organise SIFT again next year we will commit the proceeds again to Pitsa."

He said for last few years SAA have also donated to other deserving causes such as the JCI Tanjung Aru 'Anti-sharks fins soup' campaign where it was a successful campaign which eventually led to the government banning the serving of sharks fins in restaurants.

Lingham added that before that in 2012, SAA had also donated towards the family of a security personnel who died in the Lahad Datu intrusion incident.

According to Norhanida, they were grateful for the generosity and kindness shown by SAA and its president in donating the auction proceeds to Pitsa.

"We feel privileged to know there are people who still think about the predicament of those who are in need of assistance. With this kind of thoughts and assistance from the community, we feel that we are not alone (in attending to the needs of single mothers in the State)," she said.
