Kota Kinabalu: A study is needed on the legal options before deciding how to handle some 2,000ha of native land seized from non-bumiputras who had used fake certificates to get them. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to give the state government some proposals on the issue of the native land involving some 400 native titles, said Sabah Lands and Survey Department director Safar Untong.

Safar said MACC officers had met him on Friday and that both criminal and civil law elements were involved.

They would have to look at previous court decisions on ownership of land and civil cases where land was obtained fraudulently, he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said the state would have discussions with various agencies on the types of action to be taken against those holding illegally obtained native certificates, as well as other measures to protect native rights.

"The state government supports MACC's investigations into the native certificates as it is important for the protection of Sabah natives," he said.

In KENINGAU, Pensiangan Parliament Liaison Officer, Rayner Francis Udong urged those having information on people using dubious MyKads and Native Certificates to cheat to report them to the authorities.

He claimed that many immigrants upon receiving their MyKad will use it to apply for loans purportedly to set up business but have no intention to repay once getting the loan.

Rayner concurred with Kapitan Chee En Kong that there were cases in villages here where the locals became the guarantor for the loan and in the end have to pay back the loan themselves.

In this respect, he advised the local community not to sign any document without first checking or to give their MyKad to anyone.

"These people once getting the money, they will go back to India, Pakistan, Philippines and Indonesia," he said, adding that the Pensiangan parliamentary liaison office was prepared to help the people make verification if needed.
