Kota Kinabalu: A total of 16 cars believed used as illegal taxis were seized during an "Ops Kereta Sapu" conducted by the city traffic police in Inanam town on Wednesday. The three-hour operation, which ended at about 1pm, involved two officers and 12 personnel who seized the vehicles after concerns were raised by the people about the presence of illegal taxis in the area.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said police made the move after a one-week surveillance in the area prompted by information gathered from civilians as well as through meet-and-greet sessions with the people.

He said the case will be investigated under Section 51 of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act 1987. In March, a similar operation was also conducted by the city police who confiscated several vehicles worth about RM2.2 million and detained 25 men, aged between 25 and 69, after they were found offering illegal taxi services at the central market along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens.
