Dr M faces criminal libel rap

Kuala Lumpur: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will face investigations for criminal defamation over several statements he made to the media when he attended the Bersih 4.0 rally last weekend.Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police are yet to issue a notice to summon Mahathir for questioning but will do so soon.He said police have classified the case as defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code.

Asked if police will accord Mahathir special treatment as he was a former premier, Khalid said being an elder statesman, police will treat him well and take extra care of him.He said police initiated the probe on Mahathir following a police report lodged by an Umno division head.Mahathir had allegedly made defamatory statements such as claiming Umno's division heads had received bribes.On another matter, Khalid urged those incensed by certain acts that took place at the Bersih rally to keep calm and not resort to retaliation.

"Be patient and act rationally. We are investigating the offences committed at the rally and let us take action. Do not retaliate. This is why we objected to the rally being held in the open. When it is done at a closed area like a stadium, it is easier to control.

We hold Bersih responsible for the rude acts that were performed by its participants. The rally organisers should have ensured such things do not occur as it can lead to provocation of other races." he said at a function at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).He urged those who had stomped on an image of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and PAS president Hadi Awang to come forward.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
