'3rd class Federal Territory' claim

Labuan: There is a risk of local residents feeling that Labuan is treated like a "third class" Federal Territory if nothing is done about their concerns.Labuan Consumer Council Chairperson Fauziah Datuk Din said this in reference to the withdrawal of the only Boeing flight service from here to Kota Kinabalu."There is a valid reason for the Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce to express concern over the discontinuation of the service because flights operated by MASwings were not equipped to handle stretcher cases.

"Besides, Labuan hospital lacks facilities that often serious cases have to be transferred to Kota Kinabalu."She noted that when anything is lacking in Kuala Lumpur, it is immediately looked into because it is the Federal capital. The same could not be said of Putrajaya because it is the administrative capital. "But when we ask for something it is not seriously considered. Is it because we are out of sight?" Fauziah asked. She gave a quick account indicating the following points:

• Labuan had been clamouring for a bridge link to Menumbok for almost two decades, and it remains a no-go even when there were investors willing to finance the cost.• Labuan wanted a new modern port to replace the one awkwardly situated in the heart of the town causing traffic congestion and inconvenient for use by oil and gas players.
