Sandakan: Unlicensed pirate taxis are competing side by side with the 698 licensed taxis here as if there is no law and order.Sandakan Taxi Association, cum President of Federation of Taxis Association, Hiew Su Vun, said it gives the impression that the relevant authorities, namely, the police, JPJ and Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) are not solving the problem effectively.

"We have written to CVLB and the best action was they sent an officer to record my statement and no action to detain illegal taxi drivers," said Hiew.

However, he thanked CVLB for not granting as permit to an individual trying to form a taxi company owning a fleet of taxis. Taxi operators here are unlike taxi operators in West Malaysia where each individual owns his own taxi and earns a living with no income from other sources. These operators are bosses of their own.

Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board's Ismail Awang Damid said he understands the hardship faced by the taxi operators here as their presence leads to excess taxis, making business slow and tough.

He said JPJ sent some enforcement officers and his Department would do what is necessary. A licensed operator, Sudirman, 48, said the pirate often hang about in front of AmBank and Genting Mall.

Another operator, Lim, 77, who has been operating over 50 years, hopes CVLB would detain these pirate operates and fine them accordingly.

JPJ Acting Chief Lian Anyi said JPJ, the police and CVLB would launch regular operations to solve the problem.

Acting Traffic Chief, ASP Syamsu Alam Syakir said police summoned at least 14 pirate taxi operators.
