Kota Kinabalu: No decision has been made on sending of patients from the Society for the Sabah Heart Fund (SOS Heart Fund) to Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital for medical treatment.SOS Heart Fund Honorary Secretary, Eva Susau, said this after an educational tour of the medical centre at the behest of Chief Executive Officer, Jean-Francois Naa, recently.

"But we are keeping all options open for the time being. Nothing concrete at the moment. However, we look forward to future collaboration in activities aimed at raising public awareness," she told Daily Express.

President of SOS Heart Fund, Datuk Christine Vanhouten, led a five-member delegation to visit the tertiary hospital.

The others were Vice-President Datuk William J. Chai, Senior Paediatric Consultant Datuk Dr Soo Thian Lian and Committee member Abd Ghani Datuk Fadzil.

The visiting group was briefed on Gleneagles KK Hospital's services by Jean-Francois, especially the Heart Unit, followed by a meeting between the two parties.

The SOS Heart Fund delegation was introduced to the Hospital's Cardiology Team.

Among them were Dr Abu Bakar Mamat (Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon), Zikriel Hakeem Zainuddin (Perfusionist), Dr Fauziah Zainal Abidin (Consultant Paediatrician), Dr Alvin Khoh (Consultant Paediatrician) and Dr Vinodh Suppiah (Consultant Anaesthetist). Also present were Dato' Amir Firdaus Abdullah (CEO of Pantai Medical Centre) and Jacqueline Chin (Marketing Manager, Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital).

According to Susau, the SOS Heart Fund will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary with a charity fund-raising dinner.

"We hope many will come and give us the much-needed support. With the global economic slowdown, it's going to be a real challenge for us. We take this opportunity to appeal to the public to donate generously to the Society for the Sabah Heart Fund so that more patients could be given a new lease on life," she said.

To date, the SOS Heart Fund has sent 615 patients for Corrective Heart Surgeries since its establishment in 1981.

"We also hope to meet up with all our sponsored patients and hope they can contact us at [email protected]," she added.

Currently, a patient is undergoing operation in Gleneagles KL while three others are in Korea.
