Tawau: Attempts to smuggle cooking gas cylinders and diesel were again foiled by marine police on Ops Landai operation off Tanjung Batu waters at about 4pm on Tuesday. This time the seizure involved a total of 121 cooking gas cylinders worth RM21, 780 and 15 jerry cans containing 420 litres of diesel worth RM567. Sabah Marine Police Commander ACP Mohammad Madun said the smugglers' efforts in trying to avoid detection by covering the top of the vessel's cargo compartment with chicken eggs proved to be an ineffective camouflage when the team found the goods hidden inside the compartment.

He said the skipper, a 39-year-old man and his two female passengers, aged 61 and 52, were also detained after they failed to produce valid documents. He said the case is being probed under Section 7(4) Control of Supply Act 1961 for carrying controlled items without permit. Several foiled attempts involving cooking gas cylinders have been reported this month, one of which involved a total of 50 cooking gas cylinders which were also stopped from being smuggled to Indonesia in separate raids in the district.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
