Man found dead near forest with bullet wounds
Keningau: A local succumbed to his injuries shortly after he was found sprawled in a pool of blood near a forest in Kg Kisaging, Bunsit, here. A jacket, sling bag, machete and homemade shotgun were also found close to the man identified by police to be 37 years old.

District Police Chief DSP Douglas Taong on Thursday said the discovery was made by a villager who recalled hearing an explosion followed by sounds like someone groaning in pain.

"This prompted the villager, who was resting in his farm not far from his house, to rush to the source of the sound where he found the seriously injured unidentified man lying on the ground.

"The villager immediately sought help from his father and two brothers-in-law but the man succumbed to his injuries before they could carry him out," he said.

A police team from the Keningau Criminal Investigations Department rushed to the scene after being alerted of the discovery and upon inspection, found the man sprawled on the ground with traces of blood around him.

A forensics team from the State police headquarters was also at the scene to investigate.

Preliminary inspections found no traces which indicated any struggle at the scene and initial inspections found that there were injuries to the body as well as an empty shell inside the homemade firearm.

According to the deceased's brother, the man rode to the area on a motorcycle on Feb 4 and that the gun belonged to the deceased.

Douglas said post mortem results showed eight bullet pellets were extracted from the body which also reported nine injury marks.

He said the post mortem results also showed injury to the vital organs and excessive internal abdominal bleeding, adding that the case has been classified as sudden death.

On that note, he warned that action can be taken against those without legal firearm licence under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 which carries a fine of up to RM10,000 or a period of up to seven years' jail or both.

In 2014, an elderly man from Keningau also succumbed to injuries when his homemade shotgun went off after he tossed it into a boat at Sungai Pimping in Membakut.

A 36-year-old local man was also killed after being accidentally shot by his friend in a hunting trip that went awry in Sipitang in 2011.
