Phase 1 of Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah ready by 2022

Kota Kinabalu: PHASE 1 of the Pan Borneo Highway involving 706 kilometres of dual carriageway in Sabah will be completed either in 2021 or 2022, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.Pairin who is also Infrastructure Development Minister said an estimated RM12.86 billion would be spent to build and complete Phase 1 of the project.

Among the roads that would be involved in Phase 1, he said are Jalan Sindumin-Kota Kinabalu, Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Tuaran, Jalan Tuaran-Kudat, Jalan Ranau-Telupid, Jalan Telupid-Lahad Datu and Jalan Lahad Datu-Tawau.

Pairin said this when replying to Inanam assemblyman Dr Roland Chia during question time at the State Assembly here on Monday.

Pairin said the entire Pan Borneo highway project involves upgrading work of 1,236 kilometres in the State.

He said the project will pose benefits to the people living near the identified roads, townships and sub-districts such as Sindumin, Sipitang, Beaufort, Membakut, Papar, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Kudat, Tamparuli, Ranau, Telupid, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kalabakan, Serudong, Sapulut, Nabawan, Keningau and Kimanis.

Replying to a supplementary question by Chia, Pairin said the government has been making efforts to expedite the project and it would be different from the highways and federal roads in the peninsula where tolls are imposed.

The Pan Borneo highway will not have any on completion.

He said an agreement has been signed on April 11 and witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman with the launching of the mega project scheduled for April 24.
