Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission (ST) with the cooperation of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) raided two more premises on the second day of a three-day operation which started here Tuesday. On Wednesday, ST and SESB raided a cold storage premises and an office cum store in Bundusan, near here.

Six premises were raided the previous day.

Energy Commission (ST) Enforcement Head Iffah Hannah Muluk said the raid was conducted for suspected tampering of meters or electrical installations in both premises.

"On inspection, we found that there were two illegal power connections in the premises… but at the same time, there was one connection that went through SESB's meter.

"There should have been three meters, but there was only one meter in the premises as the other two were illegal connections that didn't go through designated meters," she said during the operation, on Tuesday.

She said that the proprietors will be charged under Section 37(3) and/or Section 37(14) Electrical Supply (Amendment) Act 2015 for stealing power and damaging electrical meters.

"If found guilty, they can be punished with up to five years in jail, a fine of between RM20,000 and RM1 million, or both for the first offence.

"For the second and consecutive offences, they will be fined between RM100,000 and RM5 million or jailed up to 10 years, or both.

"Previously, the maximum fine imposed was RM100,000 and/or a jail term of up to three years."

According to Iffah, the operation was the first for this year and that ST will conduct similar operations actively to ensure power theft can be eradicated.
