Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Foundation will be launching its 50th Anniversary on May 9 at the Auditorium Tun Raffae, Menara Tun Mustapha.According to its Director Datuk Sapawi Ahmad, the main objective of the event is to launch the year-long celebration of Sabah Foundation's birth and as recognition for all efforts brought about by Sabah Foundation in providing for education and the social well-being of the people in Sabah.

"We hope the event will also foster awareness of the history of Sabah Foundation and its grand socio-economic impact on the people of Sabah since its inception 50 years ago," he said.

Sapawi added that the event, due to be launched by Chief Minister cum Sabah Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Datuk Seri Musa Aman, will be highlighted with the launching of the Sabah Foundation 50th Year Anniversary book, 50th Anniversary Coin by Bank Negara Malaysia and a book entitled Sabah Crafts.

In addition, the event will witness the launching of the Sabah Foundation Volunteer Unit as well as the opening of the much anticipated Artisan Galleria, Pusat Kraftangan Sabah.

"After 50 years of existence, Sabah Foundation has successfully earned its objectives in providing education and educational facilities for Malaysians in Sabah by producing thousands of successful students throughout the State.

"This is not merely an ordinary feat as Sabah Foundation has also involved itself in other charitable causes throughout its 50 years of existence as well as creating opportunities for a more equitable distribution of economic wealth among Malaysians in Sabah and providing aid to charitable institutions and victims of natural disasters in the State," he said.

Education is provided through scholarships and loans for students to continue their secondary and tertiary education in selected fields as determined from time to time based on the workforce needs of the State.

In offering both educational opportunities and facilities, Sabah Foundation facilitates the formation of pre-schools throughout the State while Sabah Foundation's wholly-owned institution of higher learning, Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah (KTYS), has a large number of technical and vocational courses for students.

The establishment of the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) is another of its successes in expanding its role in education.

Branded as a "Green University," UCSF subscribes that future generations must rely on a strong apprehension of the interconnected green issues facing people today so as to be guided towards sustainable living.

Being an advocate of conservation, Sabah Foundation set aside five conservation areas, namely Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, Silam Coast and Taliwas River, in perpetuity as a legacy for future generations and for research and development as well as eco-tourism.

In practising an integrated and sustainable forest management that is in line with the State and National forestry development policies and legislations, Sabah Foundation collaborated with major national and international organisations such as Petronas, Academy of Sciences of Malaysia, Shell (Malaysia), The Royal Society of United Kingdom, CIRAD Forêt of France, Face the Future (formerly known as Face Foundation of the Netherlands), IKEA of Sweden and DANCED/DANIDA of Denmark.

In the interest of combating greenhouse gas offsets and climate change, Sabah Foundation adapted biodiversity enhancement of degraded forest regeneration and rehabilitation practices besides being the pioneer in introducing Reduced Impact Logging mechanism.

In diversifying its income-generating base, Sabah Foundation has ventured into agro plantation, hospitality and tourism and oil and gas. In addition, Sabah Foundation is also focusing on biotechnology and horticulture, real estate development, fisheries and food industries, besides meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industries.

"Sabah Foundation will continue striving to attain greater heights in all our endeavours in bringing about positive change and sustainable development for the people and the State.

"As our vision of a 'Dynamic, People Oriented, Committed and Caring Organisation' accentuated by the mission 'To uplift the quality of life of Malaysians living in Sabah' suggests, Sabah Foundation's policy decisions in the years ahead will continue to be aimed at creating socio-economic stability ultimately for the benefit of the people and the State, whatever the challenge, whatever the obstacle," he said.
