Traditional Sports to kick off on May 30

Kota Kinabalu: The two-day annual state-level Harvest Festival Traditional Sports Competition will kick off on May 30 as part of the harvest festival celebrations in Sabah. Datuk Louis Rampas, the chairman of Sabah Sports Board who are organising the competition said this year's competition held at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) is themed 'Peace and Friendship' and aims to preserve, promote and popularise traditional sports in Sabah.

"The competition is usually a huge attraction for visitors to the Harvest Festival celebration every year; the number of participants in the competition has increased over the last few years and we expect more to join in 2016.

"I hope the event would also foster closer ties and solidarity among the diverse ethnic groups in Sabah," he said at a media conference on Friday.

Eleven sports will be contested – 'mipulos' (arm wrestling), 'momolistik' (slingshot), 'rampanau' (walking on stilt), 'sipatu tompulalanggol' (walking with giant slippers), 'tumutu' (rice pounding), 'migazat dukug' (tug-of-war), 'monungkava kalabau' (buffalo rope trapping), 'monopuk' (blowpipe), 'mamagandai' (carrying paddy), 'mobpiri mangapui' (fire starting) and 'manandus' (spearing).

Categories contested include doubles and mixed doubles; men (65kg-75kg, below and above 85kg), women (45kg-65kg and 66kg-75kg) and above-50 male in arm wrestling game.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman will officiate the opening ceremony on May 30 with a blowpipe demonstration while Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahirudin will close the event after a tug-of-war contest on the next day.

Winners of the competition will receive cash prizes sponsored by the Sabah Arm Wrestling Association and Traditional Sports Organising Committee.
