Hundreds bid farewell to Dompok's father

Penampang: Hundreds of people turned up at Sacred Heart Church in Inobong on Monday to pay their last respects to the late Laurentius Giluk Dompok, father of Malaysia's first ambassador to the Holy See, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok. The 91-year-old passed away peacefully on May 28 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Bernard returned from Rome to be with him during his last days and so were the rest of the family members. He was laid to rest at Lampaki cemetery after a requiem mass.

Born in November 1925, the late Laurentius left behind five children, 20 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He went to St. Michael's School in Penampang and reached Standard Four when the Second World War saw Japan occupying the then North Borneo. During the war, he was prevailed upon by his family to get married as all able-bodied single males were conscripted to the Japanese military. After the war he worked as a dresser in Kudat and later as a gauger in Seria, Brunei with Brunei Shell.
