Kuala Lumpur: After almost three months on their mission to cross 12 countries by bicycle, architect Ahmad Mohd Isa, 28, and his wife Noradilah Mohd Sapie, 29, arrived in Kolkata, India on June 20.They began their expedition, 'Kembara Membuku Hikmah' on April 8 this year, choosing Masjid Negara here as their starting point. Their main objective is to perform the umrah and visit Masjidil Haram.

Ahmad said he and his wife had pedalled 1,900 kilometres by road and through village paths.

"We could not continue our plan to cycle to India from Myanmar as the road at the border of the two countries was closed.

"So we had to take a flight from Yangon and will celebrate Aidilfitri here in Kolkata. As we are fasting, we will not cycle for a long distance until after the celebration" he said through WhatsApp.

One of the challenges which the couple had to face so far was having to push their bicycles for seven hours without shoes through 22 kilometres of muddy road in a village in Myanmar.

"Another challenge was having to replace the bicycle tyres on four occasions when they were punctured by wire and glass," Ahmad recounted.

On fellow Muslims they met in Myanmar and Thailand, he said their communities were small and their culture different from Malaysian Muslims.

"But the Royal Thai Government has never prevented Muslims from practising their religion; in fact, Islamic religious education continues to develop there, different from Myanmar, where Muslims are considered as aliens," he said.– Bernama
