Contraband from P'pines seized

Kota Kinabalu: A total of RM1.36 million worth of contraband cigarettes and firecrackers were seized by marine police during a raid on a premises at Kg Pirasan, in Kota Belud, Wednesday. A Filipino, in his 20s, who had no documents, was arrested and a Naza Citra worth about RM60,000 seized. Sabah Marine Commander ACP Mohamad Madun said initial investigations showed that the goods were smuggled in from Mangsi Island, an island in the Philippines located approximately 80km from Banggi Island, in Kudat.

"Information prompted a team led by the city marine police to raid the premises at about 1am," he told a media conference here on Thursday. He said the premises is believed to be a transit spot for the goods which were suspected to be for the Kota Marudu, Kudat and Ranau market. "A total of 22,790 packets of various brands of contraband cigarettes estimated to be worth about RM1.3 million and 18,650 sticks of firecrackers valued at about RM2,820 were seized," he added. He said this was the first time that up to nine brands of cigarettes were confiscated in one raid, adding that it was perhaps based on demand from the market.

"This is also the biggest seizure for the city marine police this year," he said. "We view this as an isolated case but investigations are still on-going to see if syndicates are involved," he said.
