Putatan: Landlords must register their rented properties with local authorities for the sake of their tenants' safety in the event of a disaster.Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussein said by registering their rental houses, local authorities can determine the number of rental homes in their respective districts and the real number of its population.

"Failure to register these rental houses would make it difficult for the local authorities and the relevant departments and agencies to make sure that these properties are safe.

"Tenants only pay the monthly rental while it is the responsibility of the landlords to ensure that the properties are safe, comfortable enough for living and secure enough," he said.

Yahya, who is also Petagas Assemblyman, said this after handing over contribution to fire victims here, Friday.

Other aspects of safety, he said, include proper electrical wiring, plumbing, drainage and access to the properties.

"I also would recommend that the local communities become a bit 'busy body' and find out who their neighbours are.

Sometimes, we see rows and rows of houses and we do not even know who stay there.

"When tragedy strikes, when a fire occurs, then we suddenly found out these people who have been living in these houses were from outstation. They are from Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu," he said.

Yahya said it is also crucial to find out the identity of those living within their community because it would make it easier for the government to channel any kind of assistance to the people.

Meanwhile, he praised any individual or group that have come forward to help the victims, either through financial or material assistance.

"This is a very exemplary culture that we have shown, a spirit of voluntarism to quickly help those in need.

Fire victims need places to stay and it would be good if families or friends could help give them shelter temporarily until the victims can find better solution to their problem.

"Usually, the government will help by placing them in multipurpose halls but they must know that this is not a permanent arrangement. There are cases where fire victims decided to stay in the halls for way too long that they made these halls, their homes," he said.

Such attitude, he said should not be encouraged or ignored because multipurpose halls are built for the benefit of all the communities and not just one or two families.

"Please don't take advantage of people's generosity," he said.
