It's business as usual at jetty declared illegal
Kota Kinabalu: It was business as usual for the tourist jetty in the water village in Kampung Tanjung Aru on Thursday despite being declared illegal by City Hall, and after bits of its extension were demolished early this week. Foreigners continued to ply the wooden stilts passing through the water village where boat rides await at the end of the line, barely two days after portions of extension made out for the jetty were demolished by City Hall workers.

City Hall Director General Joannes Solidau confirmed the the jetty was illegal, and that the orders were only to demolish the extension and spare the fishermen's jetty.

"In fact, they had built two branches of jetty, one is used as a fishermen's jetty which was not demolished and the other one is an illegal extension serving as a tourist jetty," he said.

The extension was in the form of roof structures and extension for the boats to berth.

The makeshift jetty extension used by a Chinese tour company which charges fees on tourists and boat operators was found to be leased out to the company by the operator of the fishermen's jetty, the Persatuan Nelayan Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru, in 2014.

Api Api Assemblywoman Christina Liew, who had inspected the jetty herself in February this year, had claimed that the setting up of water villages provide an excellent "escape and hideout" for criminals in waiting, adding that she had also spotted several foreign-looking children begging for money from passing tourists, aside from raising concerns over the safety of tourists visiting the islands.

The lawmaker visited the jetty again following the demolition and contacted Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai who subsequently issued a stop work order on the demolition for 24 hours.
