Tawau: A total of 16 Filipinos were nabbed following inspections conducted on 169 people during an Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) integrated operation at Kg. Ice Box here, on Monday. The operation which started at 8am involved 14 departments and enforcement agencies and 115 officers and personnel led by DSP Jasmin Hussin.

Tawau Immigration Department Chief Noraini Rasi said many residents were seen jumping into the sea in their attempt to flee during the operation which ended at about 1pm.

"They, however, failed to flee because the area was already cordoned by the marine police," he said.

He said the 16 people, aged between 13 and 61, failed to produce valid documents.

Apart from the Immigration Department, the operation also involved the police, General Operations Force, Labour Department, National Registration Department, Customs, the Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Co-operative Ministry, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd and the Tawau Municipal Council among others.
